This course addresses the basic methods and principles of Classical Archaeology through a survey of the sites and artifacts of Greco-Roman antiquity. Approaches useful for the interpretation of material evidence and the problems inherent in such interpretation will be explored. Through the study of major sites in chronological sequence, we will survey the development of material culture in the Mediterranean World from the Early Iron Age to the collapse of the Roman Empire. While we consider chronological developments, we will also place Greek and Roman artistic productions into their social and cultural settings. The course thus serves as an introduction to Greek and Roman civilisations.
